We learned this week that Save the Redwoods League is repatriating over 500 acres of old-growth redwood in Mendocino County to the Intertribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council, a group of 10 Native tribes whose ancestors were forcibly removed from the land by European American settlers years ago. The tribes will serve as guardians to “protect and heal” the land.
The news this week touched a chord for Jess and Alissa, who have long recognized that the East Bay is traditional Lisjan (Ohlone) land. We sit on unceded Lisjan land - an area that was colonized by white European settlers by force, and the native tribes of this region were systematically removed to make way for the East Bay of today.
It’s important to us that the land, traditions, and culture of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan (Ohlone) people are supported and kept alive, as they are its true guardians and caretakers. For that reason, MAJ Realtors will pay Shuumi (meaning “gift” in Chochenyo) to support the work of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust in cultivated rematriation and healing. Should you choose to join in, we encourage you to visit the website to learn more about their important work.
